Fortress heritage of the last 350 years in the Upper Rhine region
The history of fortifications on the Upper Rhine stretches from millennia-old, simple wooden fortifications and earth ramparts, through Roman forts and the Limes, to medieval castles and town walls. The introduction of firearms led to completely new fortification elements for castles, palaces and towns. New, mighty fortified towns and fortress systems emerged and were constantly reinforced and expanded, especially in the last 350 years.
On the initiative of the fortress town of Germersheim, supported by FORTE CULTURA, the PAMINA Eurodistrict and the Baden-Alsace-Palatinate Tourist Association (Vis-à-Vis), a FORTE CULTURA fortress cluster has been created as part of a cross-border project, which currently includes 30 fortress monuments and museums on both sides of the Franco-German border.
