Bulwarks against the German Reich

Fort Schoenenbourg is an extensive underground bunker and defence complex located between Wissembourg and Haguenau. It was the easternmost cornerstone of the Maginot Line and was carefully designed and further developed after completion. It consists of six combat bunkers with partially rotating and extendable armoured turrets as well as extensive underground accommodation and supply facilities.

The Esch casemate is located near Hatten, around 13km south-east of Fort Schoenenbourg. As a casemate, it is also an independent defence structure within the Maginot Line.

Today, astonished tourists visit the exciting fortresses of the 20th century, which reach up to 30 metres below the earth's surface. In exciting guided tours, the Association of the Friends of the Maginot Line in Alsace (Association des Amis de la Ligne Maginot D'Alsace- AALMA) about everyday military life for up to 700 soldiers at Fort Schoenenbourg.
