Flowers, blossoms and enchanting nature where cannons once thundered
At first glance, defiant fortresses do not have much to do with nature. At second glance, however, they reveal an incredible variety of flora and fauna that leaves little to be desired.
Fortress architects have always incorporated the surrounding landscape into their defence strategy. Fortresses can be found on mountain massifs, hidden in mountain passes or exposed on rivers and coasts, including breathtaking views.
But inside the high fortress walls there are also often tranquil gardens and parks that nature lovers want to explore.
Truly beautiful combinations of nature and fortress monument can be found in the Klenzepark in the Bavarian State Fortress Ingolstadt (DE) or in the Erfurt horticultural exhibition -egapark-, in which the Cyriaksburg Citadel is perfectly integrated into the garden. It houses the horticultural museum and offers a unique view of the splendour of the flowers from the old turrets. In addition, state and federal garden shows have been and continue to be organised in fortress towns such as Koblenz (2011), Torgau (2023) or Ulm (2030) was carried out.
Relax with FORTE CULTURA in the Glacis Park of the former federal fortress in Ulm or hike along fortress walls on the Rhine (Mainz), the Elbe (Torgau, Dresden, Magdeburg), the Danube (Ulm, Ingolstadt, Komarom) or the Bug (Medzhybizh).
