FORTE CULTURA station: fortified moated castle Windischleuba in Thuringia (DE)

Fortified moated castle invites you to linger

Popular youth hostel with a wide range of facilities in a historic setting

The Windischleuba moated castle was built back in 925. At the time, it served as a border fortress to protect the neighbouring town of Altenburg. The former manor was later converted into a moated castle. For a long time, it was owned by the Counts of Meissen and Münchhausen.

The formerly trapezoidal complex has a surrounding wall with four defence towers at the corners. The inner courtyard is still surrounded by a moat on two sides. The mighty main gate is located on the north side.

Today it is a popular youth hostel with a wide range of facilities.
