FORTE CULTURA Stop: St Agatha’s Tower, Malta (MT)
The Red Jewel of the Order of St John in Malta
The striking, bright red fortress stands proudly on Marfa Ridge in the north of the island and looks back on almost 400 years of military history. Built between 1647 and 1649 Under the rule of Grand Master Jean de Lascaris-Castellar, the fortress tower was a key component of the Order of St John’s defensive network. Its main task was to monitor the strategically important strait between Malta, Comino and Gozo, prevent enemy troops from landing and, in an emergency, send warning signals to the capital, Valletta.

With its four striking corner towers, swallowtail battlements and outer walls up to four metres thick, the fortress tower was equipped to withstand a 40-day siege and could accommodate up to 50 soldiers and cannons.
The striking colour scheme served as a visual guide for the knights, enabling them to identify the fortress immediately from distant outposts. To this day, St Agatha’s Tower in Malta remains an unmistakable maritime landmark.
Following a careful restoration by the heritage conservation organisation Din l-Art Ħelwa The tower is open to visitors. A particular highlight is the climb to the roof, which offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the cliffs, the sea and the neighbouring islands.
The Red Tower is far more than just old stones – it is a living chapter in the history of European defence, embedded in a network that transcends historical borders.
