FORTE CULTURA Station: Modlin fortress system, Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki (PL)

One of the largest fortress systems in Europe

On the trail of European military policy in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki near Warsaw

The Modlin Fortress at the confluence of the Narew, Bug and Vistula rivers in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki is an internationally recognised monument to "architectura militaris".

French, Russian and Polish elements of the fortress architecture can still be recognised today. Over the centuries, Sweden, France, Russia, Germany and Poland have used this strategically favourable fortress location for their military objectives, thereby shaping European politics.

With a length of 2250 metres, the Citadel barracks are considered the longest building in Europe. One of the main gates of the citadel is named after the Polish national hero who still plays the leading role in the lyrics of the Polish national anthem - General Jan Dabrowski.

Parts of the mighty Modlin Fortress are now open to the public for tours and guided tours. Young visitors can follow in the footsteps of "Baśka Murmańska", a tame polar bear that was kept by Polish soldiers during the First World War and is still the mascot of Modlin Fortress today.
