Every year on Open Monument Day, the Mainz Citadel Festival offers a varied festival programme with various guided tours, special exhibitions, music, crafts and culinary delights.

The special exhibition of the Initiative Zitadelle Mainz e.V. (IZM) deals with the "Liberation and Reconstruction of Mainz from 1945-1955", in the Kulturei the artist Oskar Kreckwitz exhibits his "Dreams in Ruins", the City History Museum shows its current exhibition ""Read - see - hear - experience. Mainz media through the centuries" and some of Philipp Münch's photographs from the 1950s can be seen in the IZM vault.
The programme also includes numerous guided tours. IZM, NABU, the City History Museum, the Roman Mainz Initiative, the Garrison Museum, Poverty and Health; most of the initiatives and associations active on the Citadel will be offering guided tours. Families can take part in the citadel rally with a prize draw, children can have their faces painted, get to know the Malteser dogs and work on the craftsmen's street. Bookworms of all ages can enjoy the book bazaar organised by the LIONS Club Mainz, while lovers of old cars will get their money's worth at the open old and youngtimer meeting. Experienced and interested people can get active at the boules tournament and "boules for everyone".
On stage, the tap dance group "Step by Step" from Tanz-Club Rot-Weiss Casino Mainz e.V., the band "Brell und die Filous" and the jazz combo from the Peter Cornelius Conservatory entertain the guests, while the soldiers of the Légion show and explain their uniforms from the Napoleonic era to the Mayence throughout the grounds. The culinary offerings are impressive and range from coffee to beer and wine, from sweet treats such as cakes and ice cream to savoury dishes such as bratwurst, chips and vegan dishes.
On the evening before, Saturday 13 September 2025 at 7.00 pm, Dr Rainer Metzendorf will give a lecture in the Drusussaal, Building E of the Citadel, on the topic of "Destruction and Reconstruction of Mainz from 1945-1955". Admission is free.
