The Mainz Citadel Festival on the 2nd Sunday of September each year, the Open Monument Day, was expanded in 2012 to include a vintage and classic car meeting. Active cooperation with like-minded partners gives the Citadel Festival an ever broader spectrum of contributors.

Look forward to a varied programme in 2026, admission is free as always.

Alongside the cathedral, the Mainz Citadel is the most important architectural monument in Mainz. It is one of the few surviving modern citadels in Germany. In a very small space, you can explore 2,000 years of the city's history: from the Roman Drusus Stone to the Electorate of Mainz complex with its underground corridors and the air raid shelters of the Second World War.
