The fortified city of Mainz has a history of over 2,000 years. Founded by the Romans and built at a strategically important location at the confluence of the rivers Main and Rhine, its history is characterised by changing relationships in power, government and society.

The citadel forms a central, particularly heavily fortified monument within the large fortress of Mainz, with a unique and exciting history. It is one of the few surviving modern citadels in Germany.

The tour begins in the citadel moat. Between the high fortress walls, a protected natural area has developed that is home to numerous animal and plant species.

The tour continues through the history of the citadel, past the Drususstein, Germany's oldest architectural monument, across the parade ground with the former St James' Monastery and the Adolphus bulwark, which is still preserved, to the double company barracks from 1914.

The highlight of the tour is a visit to the underground corridors of Bastion Drusus, which are only accessible as part of a guided tour. Please note the information on the guided tour overleaf.

By car, you can use the parking spaces at the Citadel, the "Römisches Theater" multi-storey car park or the multi-storey car park at the "Cinestar" cinema complex.

AttentionAccess by car is only possible via "Eisgrubweg" or "Am 87er Denkmal". Parking on the Citadel is limited to 2 hours on working days.

Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended.
