FORTE CULTURA Station: San Marino fortress system (SMR)

Sky fortresses in one of the oldest republics in the world

UNESCO World Heritage Site with a proud history

Situated in the middle of the picturesque landscape of eastern Italy, an unforgettable experience awaits you. San Marino has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 and is probably the oldest republic in the world. Its independence dates back to the year 301. At the same time, San Marino is one of the five smallest republics in the world.

At 739 metres, Monte Titano is the highest mountain in San Marino and can be seen from afar thanks to its striking shape. It bears the capital of San Marino on its summit ridge, which has been guarded by three castles (Guaita, Cesta and Montale) since the Middle Ages. They are connected by underground passages and have been further fortified since then. The peaks form the emblem of the Republic and are depicted on both the flag and the coat of arms of San Marino.
