„We’d better get a move on, otherwise we won’t finish the round.“

Truly, the Büdingen night watchman has plenty to tell on his 1½-hour walk through the old streets. After every stop, he has to remind himself not to go past „curfew“.

Armed with a lantern and a halberd, the night watchman leads the way through the winding alleys of the fortified town. In his day, he kept watch over the law-abiding citizens, sent revellers home, made sure no fires broke out, and announced the time by blowing his horn every hour.

Today, dressed in period costume, he shares interesting facts about Büdingen’s old town, as well as legends and anecdotes that the town walls themselves cannot tell you during a simple stroll.

The old town is at ground level and has limited accessibility. For „strolling groups“, the Büdingen tour guides adapt the tour routes so that the walks are short and include plenty of places to sit.
