FORTE CULTURA Station: Fortified Bertradaburg Castle (DE)

There are many unexplained stories surrounding Bertrada Castle. Did Bertrada, Charlemagne's great-grandmother, found the Prüm monastery in the 8th century and is that why the castle built later was named after her?

It is recorded that the Prüm Imperial Abbey built Bertrada Castle on a rocky spur above the village of Mürlenbach in the 13th century on the remains of previous buildings. In the 16th century, it was expanded into a fortress with a mighty south-west roundel.

Today, the castle is privately owned and offers holiday flats, guided tours and the annual castle festival.

Bertradaburg Castle is one of the 11 fortress monuments in the inventory and care of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE).
