FORTE CULTURA Station: Fortified Nanstein Castle (DE)
Fortified Nanstein Castle (DE)
The once mighty Nanstein Castle rises above the town of Landstuhl on the Kahlenberg. Built in the 12th century by Emperor Barbarossa, it was made famous by Franz von Sickingen, who expanded it into a modern, firearm-centred castle at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1523, however, he was seriously injured during the defence of his fortified castle and later died on Nanstein.
Visitors can enjoy the castle experience days, the castle theatre or the jazz festival in the summer months. There is also a magnificent view of the West Palatinate moorland and the North Palatinate mountains.
The ruins of Nanstein Castle are one of the 11 fortress monuments in the inventory and care of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE).
