FORTE CULTURA Station: Fortified Pfalzgrafenstein Castle (DE)
Fortified Pfalzgrafenstein Castle in the Rhine (DE)
The fortified island castle of Pfalzgrafenstein lies like a ship in the middle of the Rhine. The 14th century castle is unique in Europe and served as a customs and military station. In 1606 it was equipped with a gun platform.
In 1814, Blücher crossed the Rhine at this point with 50,000 men, 15,000 horses and 182 guns in record time to push back the French, who had been defeated in the Battle of Leipzig.
The undestroyed and largely unchanged condition of Pfalzgrafenstein Castle fascinates countless visitors every year.
Kasselburg Castle is one of the 11 fortress monuments in the inventory and care of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE).
