FORTE CULTURA Station: Fort Gorgast (DE)
Outer fortress of the Prussian fortress Küstrin
A jewel of military architecture in the Oder-Warthe region
Fort Gorgast is located west of the Oder, tucked away on the main road 1 near Manschnow, around 7 kilometres from the former fortress of Küstrin in today's Kostrzyn nad Odrą. Built in 1883-89, the imposing defensive structure is one of four outer forts and served as a retreat for troops to defend the western bank of the Oder and Army Road 1 (Aachen-Königsberg).
Surrounded by a moat, the fort boasts impressive architecture with vaults, a powder magazine, gatehouse and ramparts. Tourists can enjoy a wide range of leisure and recreational activities in the largely unspoilt grounds as well as exciting exhibitions and events in a military-historical setting. The fort can also be hired on a temporary basis.
