Germersheim city walk with midwife Josefine

FORTE CULTURA guided tour: Fortified town of Germersheim (DE)

Exciting „contemporary witness stories“ about the year 1880

Discover the unique fortress of Germersheim and its historical significance.

The fortified town of Germersheim is located in the Southern Palatinate on the Upper Rhine. Its varied history begins with the Romans. Later a free imperial town, a chief administrative town and a garrison town, Germersheim finally became a royal Bavarian border and defence town against France at the beginning of the 19th century.

With the construction of the fortress on behalf of the Bavarian King Ludwig I, Germersheim also experienced a pioneering highlight and boom. The imposing fortifications still characterise the Germersheim townscape today.

Enter the fortified town of Germersheim on the Rhine through the imposing Weissenburg Gate with midwife Josefine and experience an entertaining walk through the town with a „contemporary witness“ from around 1880.

Midwife Josefine, who learnt her trade from her mother, will tell you many interesting and lively stories about her life and work as a midwife as well as interesting facts about the goings-on in the town and fortress at the time.

Accompany Josefine through the streets of the town, past numerous buildings and squares such as the „Storchenbau“, officers' mess or the washing place on the Queich before you leave the fortress town through the Ludwigstor.
