On 22 June, the Bavarian State Fortress of Ingolstadt will once again open its doors to the public in many places that are otherwise closed to the public, showing not only the historical buildings but also how the facilities are used today.
Ingolstadt is taking part in the International Fortress Day with the "Open Fortress Day". Around 30 different players will be presenting themselves at almost 20 different locations with information stands, exhibitions, guided tours and a children's programme.
For example, there are guided tours of the armoury at the New Palace, one of the best-preserved parts of the fortress, the Fronte Rechberg, is open and Fort Prinz Karl near Großmehring is also open.
The fortress day is intended to be Ingolstadt's "biggest open day", because the focus is not only on the fortress as such, but also on the many different users today. There will be art exhibitions in the Harderbastei, Kreuztor and Flankenbatterie 105, the artists' studios in KAP94 will also be open and the Russian Orthodox Church in the Patronenhaus will provide insights into its premises in the Patronenhaus.
Many providers also offer a children's and family programme as well as hands-on activities, including the city guard, the scouts and the fire brigade.
As part of Veterans' Day, the German Armed Forces and reservists will also be taking part in the fortress day with information stands and a vehicle show.
The "Schanz Open Day" is organised by the IFG Ingolstadt AöR, Location Marketing & Tourism Department in cooperation with the Förderverein Landesfestung Ingolstadt e.V. (Ingolstadt Fortress Promotion Association).
"The Fortress Day is already an established event in June," says IFG CEO Prof Dr Georg Rosenfeld, "by developing it into the 'Open Fortress Day', we are offering even more people - locals and tourists alike - the opportunity to get to know our fortifications and experience how important the premises still are for Ingolstadt today."
Free admission, except for special guided tours with a limited number of participants.
Fortifications are omnipresent in Ingolstadt. But what were they used for? And what do the walls look like today? We will show you all of this on "Open Fortress Day".
In the Fortress flyer to find out which fortress works are open, where they can be found and what time the various programme items take place. Use the map and timetable to plan your tour of the fortress day. The small symbols are intended to provide additional orientation. The Fortress Day is basically free of charge, with a few exceptions. However, you are welcome to use the donation boxes to support the respective exhibitors. All participating companies, associations and organisations are looking forward to your visit. So take advantage of this unique opportunity to get to know many otherwise closed fortifications in one day.
