FORTE CULTURA Station: Belfort fortress system (FR)
Symbol of resistance
Fortress bulwark according to Vauban's plans
The impressive Belfort fortress system was fortified from 1687 according to Vauban's plans and subsequently extended. The imposing citadel of Belfort, majestically enthroned on a rock, tells of heroic defences - both during the siege of 1813-1814 by Austrian and Russian troops and during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, when the city held out against stubborn attackers for 103 days.
The centrepiece of the fortress is the Belfort Citadel on a rocky outcrop above the old town, with a museum, restaurants and a fantastic panoramic view. The "Lion of Belfort" sits majestically on its western flank, a monumental work of art by sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, which commemorates the brave defenders of the city. Discover fascinating history with FORTE CULTURA, in which courage and resilience take centre stage.
