Half-timbered houses, a fortress and hidden corners
Discover the unique Fortress town of Büdingen
Anyone for whom stones are more than just walls and half-timbered houses are more than just beams will be enchanted by Büdingen’s charm. Anyone wishing to see and experience how a town came into being and grew organically over the centuries will find their ideal destination in this town nestled between the foothills of the Wetterau and the Vogelsberg. Like few other towns, Büdingen has weathered the turmoil of earlier times almost unscathed and preserved its heritage to the present day: half-timbered houses and stone bay windows, gables and dormers, sturdy walls and towers all allow you to sense the spirit of the past.
On this 1½-hour walking tour, you’ll discover the most important architectural landmarks and the most beautiful nooks and crannies of this medieval fortified town. Find out more about the impressive fortifications, the Steinerne Haus – a fortress within the fortified town – the Gothic town hall and Büdingen’s landmark, the Jerusalem Gate.
The old town is at ground level and has limited accessibility. For „strolling groups“, the Büdingen tour guides adapt the tour routes so that the walks are short and include plenty of places to sit.
