Kunigunde von Lüder, the wife of the fortress commander of Ziegenhain, and other historical figures await you for a special guided tour of the water fortress in the confirmation town of Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain. Travel back in time to the 16th century and listen to their stories...

Thanks to the sovereign of the time, Philipp von Hessen, who had his residence, the castle and the town, protected with a well-designed moat and defences, Ziegenhain is still the only town in Europe to be completely surrounded by an intact 16th century fortification.

Much has happened in Ziegenhain from the Middle Ages to the present day. But wars, hostilities and bombardments could not harm our town - Ziegenhain remained impregnable for centuries: "As strong as Ziegenhain" thus became a nationwide term for strength and stability.

Around 1539, history was made once again in Ziegenhain! Following the introduction of the Reformation, Landgrave Philip had to find a compromise between the "Anabaptists" and the "Anabaptists". Together with the Strasbourg theologian Martin Bucer, they found an agreement recognised by both sides, which was written down in the Ziegenhain Church Discipline.

With the introduction of the office of church elder and, above all, the introduction of confirmation as a confirmation of baptism, the Ziegenhain Church Discipline Code left its mark on the Reformed churches far beyond the borders of Hesse and Germany.

From April to October, different themed tours are offered for small groups and individuals every third Saturday of the month at 2.00 pm. Registration is requested by 3 pm on Fridays.

You can book a rustic snack / coffee and cake in the historical ambience of the Lüderkeller in the centre of the Ziegenhain water fortress with every guided tour. Choice of potato square, lard and sausage bread, Haaße beer, coffee and cold drinks (€15 per person) or coffee and cake (€5 per person)
