The Elbe The Elbe (Czech: Labe) stretches over al- most 1,100 km from its source in the Czech Krkonoše Mountains to its mouth in the North Sea. On its way, it touches UNESCO World Heritage Sites, nature parks or bio- sphere reserves. In the German-Czech border region Elbe- Labe, it flows through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, one of the most fascinating natu- ral landscapes in Central Europe, also known as Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland. The Euroregion Elbe/Labe The Euroregion Elbe/Labe is a European re- gion in the Czech-German border area. It has an area of 5,400 square kilometres and 1.3 million inhabitants. The Elbe River, which flows through the region over a length of ap - prox. 180 km, gives the region its name and serves as a connecting element. The river continues to shape the region to this day. From early times there were im- portant trade routes along the Elbe between Prague, Aussig and Dresden, where transit duties could be collected. Ore mining and medieval colonisation promised further we- alth. Castles and fortresses were built on the banks of the Elbe to safeguard it. This is how important cultural spaces, landscapes and objects developed, whose preservation has international value. This makes cross-border cooperation in the most diverse areas of social life between the two countries all the more important.
