Il a fait preuve de bravoure lors de la d\u00e9fense de Maastricht en 1673, ville assi\u00e9g\u00e9e et conquise par les troupes fran\u00e7aises. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cet exploit, il fut promu colonel la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e. Il atteint finalement le poste de <strong>lieutenant g\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/strong> et <strong>inspecteur des fortifications des \u00c9tats g\u00e9n\u00e9raux des Pays-Bas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">En 1680, il s'empara de la forteresse de Coevorden et la modernisa. Les autres forteresses importantes auxquelles il a particip\u00e9 sont Zwolle, Nijmegen, Grave et Breda. Les d\u00e9fenses de Bergen op Zoom, qui comptent parmi ses chefs-d'\u0153uvre, m\u00e9ritent une mention particuli\u00e8re. Ses innovations et publications d'ouvrages sur la construction de fortifications ont montr\u00e9 la voie \u00e0 suivre jusqu'au 19e si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"eplus-wrapper\">En 1692, il fut d\u00e9fait par l'assaillant Vauban lors de la d\u00e9fense de la forteresse de Namur.
