On 8 June, Whitsunday, the 19th North German Day with arts and crafts market will take place at D\u00f6mitz Fortress. The Low German language festival is one of numerous events organised as part of the 5th Low German Weeks in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 11 a.m., Plapperm\u00f6llerin Susanne Bliemel will lead a varied programme for Plattschnackers and Platt enthusiasts of all generations. The programme includes the group T\u00fcdderkram from Wismar with traditional North German folklore, influenced by Irish and American folk, the mixed shanty choir \"Achtern Moehlendiek\" e.V. Hagenow and NORMA & Band. The Hamburg musicians combine Low German songs with modern, pop sounds. The dance group De Oewerpetters from the Wendland region will also bring some vigour to the stage. They have been an integral part of the North German Day for years. Dierns un Jungs from the Fritz Reuter D\u00f6mitz secondary school centre present sketches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are numerous other activities on offer at the fortress. The day begins at 10 a.m. with an ecumenical service on the Held bastion. A free guided tour of the fortress in Low and High German takes place at 2.30 pm. The firecracker group of the Concordia Shooting Society of 1848 e.V. of the Hanseatic City of Rostock will once again be a guest. They will be supported for the first time by the Sch\u00fctzenzunft zu Crivitz 1839 e.V. On the Bastion Drache, the marksmen will fire firecrackers and explain the background to this tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quiz and a rally up Platt provide aha moments for young and old. Craft stations, a visit from the life-size Abrafaxe and the arts and crafts market round off the festival. Artisans and hobbyists offer their own handmade goods. These include beautiful things made of clay, linen or wood as well as silver and leather jewellery. And of course there is also plenty to eat and drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town of D\u00f6mitz organises the North German Day in cooperation with the Heimatverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. The event is financially supported by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Ludwigslust-Parchim district and the Sparkasse Mecklenburg-Schwerin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00f6mitz Fortress<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

D\u00f6mitz Citadel is the oldest and most characteristic building in the town of D\u00f6mitz. It is the only completely preserved Renaissance pentagonal fortress in northern Germany and is one of the best-preserved lowland fortresses in northern Europe. Fortified with high brick walls, bastions, casemates and a drawbridge, the fortress impresses every visitor. The imposing bulwark on the banks of the Elbe in Mecklenburg stretches out in the shape of a pentagon. This important cultural monument provides an insight into its eventful past and takes visitors on an exciting journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
